The project, implemented in partnership with the Swiss Embassy in Amman, aims to enhance the capabilities of civil society organizations and Jordanian national institutions in preparing reports, organizing fact-based advocacy campaigns, and providing technical support for writing individual and joint shadow reports that align with the 2024 Universal Periodic Review (UPR) standards.
The project also aims to initiate a national-level consultation process with civil society organizations and stakeholders in the Jordanian government, especially the Government Human Rights Coordinator team and the Permanent Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss national coordination mechanisms for preparing the national report for the fourth UPR cycle to be held in 2024.
The project, which runs for 7 months (May – November 2022), aims to achieve two main objectives:
- Enhance the capacities of 20 civil society organizations and 5 Jordanian national institutions, and provide them with technical support for writing shadow reports that comply with international human rights reporting standards.
- Initiate national advocacy efforts for the fourth UPR cycle in 2024 with civil society organizations, national institutions, the Government Human Rights Coordinator team, and the Permanent Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and strengthen national coordination mechanisms among stakeholders to advance Jordan’s commitments to the fourth UPR cycle in 2024, including preparing the national report.
This project includes implementing the following strategies and activities:
• Coordination with Stakeholders: This will involve coordinating with active civil society organizations, national institutions, and the Government Human Rights Coordinator team.
• Capacity Building for 20 Civil Society Organizations: This will involve training 40 staff members from these organizations in writing individual or joint shadow reports that align with international human rights standards.
• Capacity Building for 5 National Institutions: This will focus on enhancing their technical and professional capabilities in writing individual national reports for the fourth UPR cycle in 2024.
• Formation of the National Civil Coalition for the UPR 2024: This coalition will include 30-40 Jordanian civil society organizations.
• Initiation of National Advocacy and Consultation: This will involve organizing a consultation and advocacy meeting between the Jordanian civil coalition, national institutions, other civil society organizations, the Government Human Rights Coordinator team, and the Permanent Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to develop a joint action plan.
• Holding a Two-Day Meeting with Government Stakeholders: This meeting will focus on discussing joint work mechanisms and the process of preparing the national report for the fourth UPR cycle in 2024.
• Launching a Social Media Campaign: This campaign aims to promote Jordan’s commitments to the 2024 UPR cycle.
