CDFJ Welcomes the Release of Al-Zoubi
Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) welcomed the release of journalist Ahmed Hassan Al-Zoubi from prison, and the approval to replace the rest of his prison time with community service.
CDFJ affirmed its rejection and opposition to the rulings that deprive freedom in cases of freedom of expression and media, calling for a review of the package of laws related to the media and align them with international standards, agreements and treaties ratified by Jordan.
In this context, CDFJ called for the release of journalist Hiba Abu Taha, who is also serving a prison sentence, demanding that the remainder of her prison term be replaced with community service.
CDFJ expressed its hope that the Prime Minister would order the review of the Cybercrime Law, noting that the Jordanian state had agreed to this during the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights.
CDFJ urged the House of Representatives to prepare an alternative draft law to the Cybercrime Law in consultation with all stakeholders, and to request the government to adopt it, which would help improve Jordan’s record in international reports and indicators.
CDFJ appreciated the positive moves of the government, represented by the Ministry of Government Communication, in networking and communicating with stakeholders in the media sector and listen to the challenges that must be overcome to advance media freedom in Jordan.
