On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, which the world celebrates on May 3 of every year, Center for Defending Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) launched its annual campaign for community awareness of the importance of the press, its role in enhancing society’s right to know, and consolidating democracy.
The campaign, which was launched by CDFJ with the support of Greater Amman Municipality and Zain Company, focused on the importance of protecting the rights of journalists.
The campaign, which was placed on a number of bridges in the capital Amman, urges the public to protect journalists, and considers that the existence of a free, independent media reflects the freedom of societies.
The awareness campaign will continue until 10 June 2022, and is expected to reach for hundreds of thousands of passersby in main Amman roads.
The phrases that were printed on the banners of some important bridges include the following:
- The right to information… a right for the people.
- Free Media = Free society.
- The media is the eye of society.
- Media freedom… is our freedom.
- Sustainable development cannot be achieved without free media.
- Protect the freedom of the media.
- NO to laws that restrict the freedom of the media.
It is noteworthy that this community awareness campaign began more than 10 years ago in cooperation with The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
